Earth Day is a time to reflect on what we as individuals and HVACR industry professionals can do to lessen our environmental impact.

Here are three points we should all bear in mind, not only on Earth Day but also every day:

 1. Prioritize energy efficiency.

Using a low-GWP refrigerant isn’t the only way to minimize environmental impact. While so-called “natural” refrigerants have a low GWP, they are often less energy-efficient (with higher overall emissions) than low-GWP HFCs, HFOs, and blends.

 2. Conduct regular system maintenance.

Extending the life of your existing equipment will go a long way. Proper maintenance can help maintain efficiency and prevent refrigerant leaks, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional systems  are easier to service than complex natural refrigerant systems, making it simpler for technicians to identify and address issues before they become more serious.

 3. Pursue the impact you can have now.

Operators need to think critically about how to make the most significant impact in the immediate term. When it comes to refrigeration, this means transitioning existing conventional systems to use more sustainable refrigerants. The industry should feel great about the low-GWP HFCs, HFOs, and blends on the market today.

Maintaining the health of the Earth and its atmosphere is a shared responsibility. The HVACR industry is committed to doing its part. Thank you for being part of this important effort.
